What you see on screen
For four to five minutes the examiner asks abstract questions linked to your Part 2 topic, comparing and speculating. Answers need development, not anecdotes alone.
How it is marked
The same four criteria apply across the test, but these developed answers provide the strongest evidence for band 7 and above.
Strategy
- Structure answers as opinion, reason, example; that skeleton stops abstract questions from rambling.
- Use speculative language like 'I suppose' and 'on balance' to show range under pressure.
- Address the general issue, not just your own story; examiners redirect candidates who only narrate.
- Narrow huge questions aloud: 'For most people, I think...' then explain your reasoning.
Traps that cost marks
One-line answers to abstract questions force examiner prompts and read as limited fluency.
Dropping memorised linkers like 'last but not least' into wrong contexts hurts vocabulary accuracy.
