IELTS by destination
IELTS preparation for the UK
The UK is the one destination where candidates most often book the wrong test. Two versions exist side by side — standard IELTS and IELTS for UKVI — with identical content and scoring but different administrative status, and only one of them counts for visa purposes.
UKVI or standard IELTS — the distinction that matters
IELTS for UKVI is a UK government-approved Secure English Language Test (SELT), run at approved centres with additional identity verification. If your route requires a SELT — many visa applications do — only IELTS for UKVI counts, and a standard IELTS result cannot be substituted afterwards.
Many UK universities, however, accept standard IELTS Academic for admission, particularly where the institution sponsors your student visa and assesses English itself. The safe order of operations: confirm with your university or on the official UK government pages which version your specific route needs, and only then book. The preparation is identical either way — the papers share the same format, content style and scoring.
Preparing for either version
Because UKVI and standard IELTS are the same test academically, every hour of practice transfers. UK routes typically ask for IELTS Academic; the Academic mocks here reproduce the computer-delivered format used at UK test centres — one-play Listening audio with the review window, three timed Reading passages, and typed Writing with the word count visible.
For Writing — the module UK-bound candidates most often retake — the samples library shows the same question answered at band 6.5, 7.5 and 9 with the differences annotated, and the writing checker returns four-criterion practice feedback on your own answers.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between IELTS and IELTS for UKVI?
Content, difficulty and scoring are identical. IELTS for UKVI is administered under UK government SELT conditions at approved centres, and is the only version accepted where a visa route requires a SELT. Confirm which your route needs before booking — results are not interchangeable afterwards.
Do UK universities accept standard IELTS Academic?
Many do, especially when the university assesses English itself as your visa sponsor. Requirements vary by institution and course, so confirm directly with the university before choosing which version to book.
Does this practice prepare me for the UKVI version?
Yes — UKVI and standard IELTS share the same papers and band scales, so computer-delivered practice here prepares you for either. Only the booking and test-centre administration differ.
